Dans le regard de Vincent by Raymond Martinez
This book is an artistic reflection on Vincent van Gogh, his work, and his legacy.
It begins by exploring The Starry Night Over the Rhône, showing how Van Gogh blends observation of reality, technical modernity, spirituality, and inner vision. The author highlights how the painter combines the landscape of Arles and the celestial landscape in this painting, despite their opposing directions. Van Gogh did not reproduce the world; he reinvented it according to his own sensibility.
The author then presents a documentary investigation in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, at the psychiatric clinic where Van Gogh was interned. He examines the act of painting and draws a parallel between the artist and the current patients of the art therapy workshop. Through striking photographs of their easels covered in traces of paint, he reveals an unintentional collective work, a symbol of memory, creation, and resilience.
Finally, he investigates Tree Roots, Van Gogh’s last painting. The author proposes the hypothesis that the painter, shortly before his suicide, concealed a self-portrait within this work, depicting him in his final moments.
The book as a whole blends art history, photography, research, and emotion to better understand Vincent van Gogh’s perspective, his torments, and his profound humanity.
